Language Enrichment and Acceleration Program |

|
What is Leap?
Leap is an early intervention enrichment and acceleration program designed for
kindergarten and first grade students. All students in kindergarten and first grade
qualify for daily language arts instruction in the LEAP Lab. |
LEAP is based on the
premise that early intervention is the key to ensuring optimal success in reading. |
LEAP combines research-based
Reading Recovery Strategies with the Cunningham Four Blocks instructional model. |
LEAP activities are designed to
meet the needs of students who are weak in beginning reading and writing and also students
who read and/or write at or above grade level. |
In the LEAP Lab, students are
actively engaged in the reading/writing process during the daily lesson. Each week,
all students read a new book, generate writing to reflect comprehension of the book, and
generate words and practice writing high frequencey words. They are taught
strategies that good readers use. |

Ms. McIntyre, the LEAP Lab teacher, works with a class on letter recognition.
|

Mrs. Lowery takes Running Records to assess her students' progress in reading.
|

Students write sentences about the book they are reading.
|

Ms. McIntyre shows students how to use the cover of the book to make predictions.
|

Mrs. Sullivan leads a shared writing activity with her small group of students.
|

Students take turns reading orally to work on building fluency.
