The FMS READS! programs is a school-wide reading initiative.  By participating in this reading endeavor, students will be provided with daily opportunities to read books from a variety of genres.  As teachers and students enjoy reading together, we will ensure that FMS READS!

There are three components in FMS READS!

Component 1:  DIRT

The primary component is a special class period called DIRT or Daily Independent Reading Time.
There will be a rotating schedule specifying during what class period DIRT will occur.  The students and teachers will read for 30 minutes on:

--Mondays in English
--Tuesdays in Math
--Wednesdays in Social Studies
--Thursdays in Science
--Fridays in one Exploratory class


LITERACY GOALS


1) 
Each student will be required to read 25 books.

2)  Each student will be required to write a research paper.

3)  Each student will be required to learn reading and writing strategies that will improve his/her scores.

4)  Each student will participate in enriched English/Language Arts classes.

5)  Each student will be required to write frequently in ALL classes.

Component 2:  LIBRARY GENRES

A secondary component focuses on the literary genres.  At the beginning of each grading period, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students rotate the genres upon which they concentrate.  They alternate reading from the general categories of:

1.  Fiction
2.  Biographies
3.  Nonfiction

Component 3: INCENTIVE PROGRAM

The final component is an incentive program using the Accelerated Reader point system.  There are several initiatives involved in motivating our students in their daily reading efforts.  These activities encourage students to read and take tests demonstrating reading comprehension.

*  Page Turner Parties - Celebrations for students with the highest number of points.

*Interviews - Students or teachers discuss books they are reading on HNN, "Hornets' Nest News" broadcasts.

*Comfort Cafe - Friday morning opportunities for students to redeem Accelerated Reader points for muffins, biscuits, juice, school supplies, and other treats.
