Karen N. Bush, Principal
Our guidance counselors are dealing with their usual daily assignments and getting ready to begin the registration process for our 8th graders as they get prepared to go to the Dorman Freshman Campus. After that will follow registration for our 6th and 7th graders, 5th grade Orientation, and PACT.
HONESTY, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILTY, and PRODUCTIVITY..."Character Counts" at Gable Middle School! This year Gable students are focusing on these 4 characteristics to jumpstart our school-wide Character Education Program. In September each grade will attend an assembly featuring our drama students performing in skits and our principal, Mrs. Bush, sharing her philosophy on character. We, here at Gable, recognize the importance of character in the total education of our students and strive to build caring, productive citizens of tomorrow.
Attendance
Group and Individual Counseling
The philosophy of the Gable counselors is to serve as advocates and support persons for middle school students as they experience the many physical, emotional, social, and intellectual changes of adolescence. The counselors seek to provide an environment where students can come and share thoughts and feelings as well as solve problems. The counselors also serve as resource persons for parents, teachers, and community as all work for the adjustment and success of the whole child.
Any student needing to see a counselor is encouraged to do so. Students may stop in to make appointments between classes, but are not allowed to wait in the office without a pass from their teacher. If the counselor is out or not available, students must leave a note in the counselor's box requesting an appointment. The counselor will get back to the student as soon as possible. All appointment times are subject to the exploratory teacher's approval. Every effort is made not to schedule counseling during academic classes. However, in cases of emergency, the counselor may arrange such a time with the appropriate teacher.
Parents and teachers are also encouraged to refer students when needed. This may be done through a note, phone call, or the result of a conference.
Origin of Red Ribbon Week
At 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 7, 1985, Enrique ("Kiki") Camarena stashed his DEA badge and his service revolver in his desk drawer and headed for a luncheon date with his wife, Mika. Kiki, having come dangerously close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline which he suspected extended into the highest reaches of the Mexican army, police and government, would never see his wife again. Kiki's body was found 30 days later in a shallow grave, 70 miles away. He had been tortured, beaten and brutally murdered.
In response to this outrageous act of violence, parent groups across the nation began wearing and displaying RED RIBBONS to demonstrate their commitment to eliminate the demand for drugs. The RED RIBBON became the annual catalyst to show intolerance for drugs in schools, workplaces and communities. It is also a week of celebration of drug-free lifestyles and the potential that individuals and communitites can reach when they choose to remain drug-free. Also, the week highlights efforts of individuals and groups within each community who have joined together to work in drug prevention.
RED RIBBON WEEK has become the largest single community-wide effort that raises awareness for the need to eradicate drugs from our society. It is celebrated during the last week of October.

The guidance counselors worked with Gable parents last March to help them have their children get through the teen years safely. Parenting sessions were offered March 8, 9, 11, and 12 from 8:15 - 9:15 in the media center. The video-based program was called "Parent to Parent," and has been used for several years to help many parents.
The guidance counselors at Gable are introducing a new career information resource for our students this year. This resource is a web site that our school has purchased access to that is an online career guidance and curriculum program that is available to teachers, parents, and students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students are given a special user name and password that allows them access. Within the program, there are several centers for students. Each center serves a unique purpose. In the Exploration Center, students can take a self assessment survey to find the top 20 occupations that match their interest. They can search for information on 400 occupations. They can also search for college information. They will be able to access this program as they move through Dorman.
The guidance counselors are excited that we will be able to provide each of our Gable students with grade specific CD's from the Department of Higher Education. This is a CD containing lots of resources for students encouraging academic preparation and college awareness. Each grade CD is an interactive program which students, parents, and teachers can use to help the student create a roadmap for college success.

5th Grade Orientation & Registration
Our guidance couselors visit the 5th graders at Anderson Mill Elementary, Pauline-Glenn Springs Elementary, and Roebuck Elementary during the month of April each year. They talk to them about Gable Middle School and explain how to register for classes. Parents of the 5th graders are invited to come for a Parents' Orientation Night shortly after their visit. Then the 5th graders from the 3 elementary schools that will be attending Gable will visit our school. There will be an assembly for them introducing them to the various activities that they can participate in as middle schoolers. They will end their visit with a tour of the school.
Registration for rising 7th and 8th graders
Registration cards are
given to all rising 7th and 8th grade students in March each year to choose
their Exploratory classes for next year.
All cards are due to be turned
in the first of April.
The 9th grade registration process took place from January through the end of February last year. Our 8th grade students completed their Dorman High School registration cards and picked their high school electives. As of March 8th we received word from the Dorman Counselors that our students, teachers, and counselors were to be commended for doing an outstanding job this year with registration. We thank our parents for their help in monitoring the students' information and discussing the classes. High school is such an important step for our students and we think it is crucial that they get into classes that will provide success.
