  Continental Math League

Continental Math League is a nationally organized contest held each year. The contest consists of 5 meets per year held in schools all over the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. Each meet has 6 non-routine problems that take creativity and "thinking out of the box" to solve. There is a time limit of 30 minutes. Scores are kept for all students during the school year and the 2 highest scorers in each grade level within a school win a medal in recognition of their achievement and each class winner receives a certificate. The Continental Math League Organization keeps schools abreast of their national and state ranking as well as provides individual recognition. During, 2006-07, L.E. Gable's 6th grade team placed 3rd in the state of South Carolina. Gable's 7th grade team was first in our state and the 8th grade team also placed second.

The purpose of our "Math Lunch Bunch" is to encourage superior work in 7th grade math. It is open to all 7th graders who make an "A" on their report card in math, pre-algebra, or algebra. “Math Lunch Bunch” meets a short time after report cards are issued. Each “Lunch Bunch” centers around a theme, such as “Lunch in Italy,” that coordinates with the Language Arts/Social Studies curriculum. Staff members should be dependable, enthusiastic, loyal, level-headed (though imaginative), and be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Staff members need to work efficiently under pressure and have ample time to carry out duties. SAGA activities include leadership, reporting/writing, designing, organizing, photos, and business management (ads, etc.).
